CHALLENGE

Overcoming data fragmentation

In the hyper-competitive financial sector, data is the primary currency of strategic advantage. For Volksbank, a powerhouse serving North-East Italy, legacy batch-based outsourcing and fragmented data warehouses created critical operational bottlenecks. These silos restricted scalability and rendered real-time Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation nearly impossible.

The Strategic Imperative: Bridging the Digital-Local Gap

For a bank that prides itself on deep local roots, the inability to move at the speed of global digital challengers was a strategic liability. The core challenge was clear: move from a restricted, siloed environment to a model that empowers over 1,500 collaborators with high-speed, localized insights without sacrificing the high-touch service that defines the institution.

OUR SOLUTION

Architecting a Unified Data Intelligence Platform

By leveraging the Microsoft technology stack, we helped Volksbank build a scalable, future-proof data ecosystem. To break the cycle of fragmentation, Volksbank utilized Microsoft Fabric to establish a Hub & Spoke paradigm, centralizing data governance while empowering Business Units to innovate independently.

Through a hybrid low-code/pro-code model, the bank has accelerated time-to-market while building the foundation necessary for enterprise-grade AI.

The transition from siloed legacy systems to a Single Point of Truth is synthesized below:

Legacy Criticalities Fabric-Enabled Solutions
Fragmented DWH silos OneLake: Unified storage and governance
Batch-based bottlenecks Hub & Spoke: Scalable, decentralized access
Scalability limits Data Mesh: Domain-owned Data Products
Delayed reporting Direct Lake Mode: Real-time BI insights

This is an operational evolution. By transitioning to a Data Mesh, Volksbank transformed data from a cost center into a reusable asset. The integration of Direct Lake mode eliminates reporting latency, allowing over 1,500 collaborators to act on real-time intelligence. By aligning technical capability with regional banking needs, Volksbank has turned its infrastructure into a sustainable competitive advantage.

Building the Intelligent Data Foundation

Volksbank’s "Foundation" phase successfully integrated 8 primary data sources into a unified Lakehouse, ensuring absolute data integrity via a Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers). By orchestrating over 1,000 tables, the bank transitioned from siloed, static repositories to a Data Mesh—a value-driven ecosystem where data is treated as a reusable, high-value asset.

This shift is optimized by Direct Lake mode in Power BI, enabling instantaneous insights rather than delayed batch reporting. Executives now make decisions based on the current state of the bank, turning a former technical bottleneck into an agile foundation for real-time strategic growth.

AI Innovation: Automating Technical Governance

At Volksbank, innovation extends beyond the front office to transform back‑end data governance. Through an Augmented Data Governance approach, the bank automates technical data mapping and manage large‑scale outsourced datasets.

The solution democratizes data knowledge by converting technical metadata and statistical profiling into clear, business‑ready descriptions. Using AI‑driven analysis of column labels, distributions, and data quality metrics, the system generates enriched documentation in an Excel‑based output. Each field includes AI‑proposed descriptions validated through a human‑in‑the‑loop review by Data Stewards.

This approach bridges the gap between IT architecture and business strategy, enabling Business Owners to understand their data assets in plain language while accelerating governance and compliance.

RESULTS

Trusted data at scale

The move to a unified platform provides tailored advantages across the Volksbank stakeholder spectrum:

  • Business Users: Achieve true self-service autonomy with a unified corporate semantic model, reducing onboarding time and technical dependency.
  • Data & Analytics Teams: Benefit from the elimination of domain-specific inconsistencies through a Unified Semantic Model, leading to more robust governance and faster modeling.
  • Developers & AI Builders: Can build highly reliable agents by utilizing Ontology and Graph Reasoning to ensure every AI interaction is grounded in the bank’s specific context.
  • Operations Teams: Leverage real-time decision support via agents that interpret signals and act securely to optimize risk management and customer impact.

BENEFITS

Enterprise-Wide Data Consolidation

Unprecedented Efficiency

High-Precision AI

Strategic Scalability

Conclusion

The journey between BIP xTech and Volksbank represents more than a migration; it is an evolution toward "Fabric IQ". By centralizing knowledge and decentralizing operational power, the bank has unlocked the next frontier: Agentic AI.

Volksbank is transitioning from a "Data-Driven" institution to an "Autonomous Bank", where Data and Operations Agents work independently to interpret policy and drive business value. This architecture proves that a regional leader can maintain its high-touch local presence while operating with the speed and intelligence of a global digital pioneer.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

With Microsoft Fabric, we have initiated a radical change in how the bank interacts with data: moving from fragmented processes and batch-related wait times to a unified platform that makes information accessible, governed, and reusable. Today, decisions are increasingly based on reliable, shared data, and we are progressively building a true data culture—fostering widespread data awareness and empowering teams with the autonomy to generate value.
