The latest research from the 5G & Connected Digital Industry Observatory, sponsored by BIP xTech, highlights a decisive shift. Industrial connectivity in Italy is no longer just an IT expense — it’s a strategic driver of innovation.
Connectivity in Italy: from infrastructure to strategy#
The Italian industrial 5G market will reach €10.5 million in 2025, a 43% increase from 2024. Yet its full potential remains untapped. The focus is shifting from pure technology deployment to building a comprehensive Connectivity Strategy.
Most Italian companies are still early in their journey. About 45% operate as Essential Utility and 42% as Performance Backbone, while only 13% use connectivity as a real innovation driver — the Development Playground or Business Transformer categories.
Adoption is strongest in Logistics & Transport (26%) and Manufacturing (23%), which together account for nearly half of all private 5G projects. This growth comes from advanced use cases such as predictive maintenance, collaborative robotics, and autonomous logistics. Private investment is also rising, with only 10% of new projects relying on public funding.
To scale, companies must overcome persistent challenges. From security and trust to integration complexity and vendor lock-in, and evolve their mindset: connectivity isn’t a cost to optimize, but a lever for business transformation.
